I have been writing scripts for corporate video, TV and radio spots, and explainer videos for over 10 years. I love working in the restricted format of video that requires me to get attention, identify with the viewer, and generate an action within the 30 second or 90 second time frame.
My First Copywriting Job
I started my career selling radio advertising. I sold my first account, a small retail business. They told me I have to write my own commercial if the customer doesn’t have one. I sat down and wrote a very basic script but it was good. From there I began to develop more creative ideas to set my spots apart from the others.
Writing Video Scripts
I left sales to do video production. I was drawn to the idea of visual storytelling. When I got my first corporate video project the same thing happened. I needed a script. I didn’t know a script writer so I took a shot at it myself. The client was pleased with the results. The video looks a bit dated today but the script still stands up.
When I started shooting and editing local TV and cable spots I was so annoyed by those generic spots the television stations throws in for free in exchange for a schedule. My spots had very low budgets but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be creative. I made my commercials creative regardless of budget. You can see a few of these spots on my website. They may also look a little dated but I’m still proud of the quality of the writing and the originality.
I worked for a few years for a high-tech firm in Austin Texas writing videos, brochure and web copy, and newsletters. I wore a tie and worked 8-5! Ahhh. I did however learn a great deal about writing corporate video copy. I was meant to be independent so I went back into the self-employed world after four years.
Explainer Video Scripts
The newest trend at the time was the animated explainer video. These simple, cartoon style videos were catching on. I liked the simplicity and non-pretentious nature of these videos. I particularly like the storytelling aspect of this style. Explainer videos also allow me to write in a casual, conversational style. Animated explainer videos are still popular and I have become an expert at writing them.
Regardless of the visual style, a good video starts with a good script. A great video needs a great script. Quality copywriting is my passion and I’ll continue to do this as long as I can.
I take a systematic approach to writing. I highlight a key pain point your target audience is experiencing and introduce your product or service as the solution. I sounds like a formula but I make sure it doesn’t come across as one. I write in a clear, direct manner using an economy of words. I know we have to get the attention of the viewer and work to keep their attention throughout. If I can entertain them along the way then that’s just icing on the cake.
